There are seven Sacraments in Catholic Church: Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Penance, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders, Matrimony.
In the Diocese of Leeds, the Sacraments of Initiation (Reconciliation, Holy Communion and Confirmation) are celebrated for children during their years of primary education:
- Reconciliation in Year 3 (Ages seven and eight)
- Holy Communion in Year 4 (Ages eight and nine)
- Confirmation in the first part of Year 6 (Ages ten and eleven).
Sacramental preparation is usually organised by the parish with the support of the local Catholic primary school. Please contact your local parish priest for further information.
The Diocese has recently produced a new Confirmation resource (Empowered by the Spirit: The Gift of Confirmation). And are working on diocesan resources for First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion.
For further information, resources or support please contact the Diocesan Co-ordinators of Catechesis, Gregory Stacey (for adult catechesis) or Breda Theakston (family catechesis & Baptism).
Preparation for the children receiving the Sacrament of Holy Communion (Eucharist) and Reconciliation
Following the Pastoral letter from Bishop Marcus in September 2017, available in full here, changes will be made to when our children receive the First Sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist. Our school delivers sessions on the Sacraments through family catechesis. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to live out your faith with your child.
These changes will begin in the academic year 2017-2018 with the Sacrament of Reconciliation being received by those children who are currently in Year 2.
