Our Lady and St Brendan's Catholic Primary School is committed to meeting and exceeding the requirements of the 2014 National Primary Curriculum. Our schemes of work have been updated to reflect the content and challenge of the new curriculum with greater emphasis on Outdoor Learning and the Development of Speaking and Listening.
The curriculum is taught with the consideration of the needs of all learners. Our curriculum is exciting and encourages children to nurture a passion for independent lifelong learning. We are proud to say that Forest Schools is integrated into all areas of the curriculum and we benefit from two fully qualified Level 3 Forest School Practitioners as teaching staff.
In EYFS and Year 1 we use Letters and Sounds and Phonics Play for the teaching of Phonics, Early Reading and Writing. The scheme then becomes an intervention for children in Year 2 and above who need phonic reinforcement. Across school we also use a range of Reading Schemes, such as - Rigby Star and Oxford Reading Tree to support the children's development of fluent reading for meaning.
Children across school have their full entitlement to Reading, Writing, Maths, PE and RE. These subjects are often taught in the morning. Our Catholic Religious Education curriculum delivery, is supported by 'The Way, the Truth and the Life' scheme - as recommended by the Diocese of Leeds. Other subjects are taught across the week, often together in 'Broad and Balanced Curriculum' work.
PE is supported by a specialist PE teacher, who works with most children across the school throughout the year.
