"Help me to journey beyond the familiar and into the unknown." Prayer of St Brendan

Year 1 -St. Bernadette Class

Miss Mone and Mrs Sherris teach the pupils in Year 1 supported by Miss Asha.

Spring Term

This half term in Year 1 our English and Topic work will be closely linked. The children will be focusing on The Little Red Hen and Jack and the Beanstalk. Both are Traditional Tales and the children have already studied Little Red Riding Hood, Goldilocks and The Three Little Pigs. The children will explore the Traditional Tales through role play, retelling the story with a different ending and creating new characters. We will include Non-Fiction writing with recipes and instructions. The children will also reflect on the moral of the story – discussing the importance of friendships and the consequences of our actions.

The Little Red Hen and Jack and the Beanstalk have clear links to the ‘Growing’ topic- where the children will explore bread making, recipes and plants.

In science we will be looking at the best conditions for growing seeds. We will be naming common plants and plant parts. We are looking at the importance of leaves. We will be writing a bean diary to show the changes as seeds grow.

As always we continue to have a main focus on Phonics as we prepare for the national Phonics Screening Test in the Summer term and are now beginning daily Spelling Bee challenges.

Sentence writing is a priority, focusing on capital letters, full stops and finger spaces and children being able to read their sentences so that they make sense.

Each morning the children also start the day with sharing our ‘Challenge Box’ that includes literacy and numeracy recap tasks.

In our Maths we will be looking at numbers to 30, including 1 more 1 less than a given number. We will be working on place value showing how many 10s and how many 1s are in a given number. We will be looking at measures to link with our growing topic.

We have now started our new topic in RE, exploring Families and Celebration. We have reflected on the special times we share with our families at home and are going on to explore the Church as a family, firstly learning about the Sacrament of Baptism. We will be acting out the Baptism ceremony in class and making Baptism cards. We will also be listening to key events in Jesus’ childhood that are recorded in the New Testament.
