Shipley Novices - Diving Competition 14 & 15th of March 2015.

Each year youngsters from near and far make a splash at Shipley Swimming Pool as the City of Bradford Esprit Diving Club host the biggest novice diving event in Great Britain. Around 250 divers aged between 6 and 16 attended, making for a very busy and competitive weekend! All the big clubs of GB were in attendance such as: Edinburgh, Plymouth, Luton, Sheffield, Corby, Darlington, Southampton, Ayr and Leeds to name a few. This year the competition was particularly well attended with the likes of Edinburgh bringing a team of 45 divers.

Abbie was diving again in the group E (8-9yrs) girls group, she pulled off a blinding first dive off the 3m spring board (forward tuck roll - with pike out) scoring a 10 from one of the judges, setting the bar very high for the other 16 girls in the group. During the event Abbie’s lowest score from any one judge was a 7, over the 6 dive event Abbie had an overall impressive score of 176 points. We believe this could be a new record for the group E score since the competition first started in 2006.

Just to update you with Abbie’s progress… Last weekend 17th & 18th of January the 2015 North East Regional Grand Prix Leg 1 & 2 took place at the John Charles Centre for Sport (Leeds).

Abbie competed in the girls group E (8-9yrs) in a twelve dive event with competitors coming from all over the North East and the whole of Yorkshire, although she was a little rusty after the Xmas break, it was certainly a great start to the year.

Abbie managed to secure a Bronze medal in the NER grand prix, as well as a Bronze in the ASA Yorkshire championships. This now means she’s obtained a ranking of third in Yorkshire.

More importantly Abbie has scored enough points to qualify for the ASA National Skills Championship event to be held later in the year.

Well done Abbie.  We are all very proud of you at OLSB!

June 2016: Update on Abbie's diving

The diving season starts September to July just like the School academic year. The 2015/16 Season has been a very eventful time for Abbie, with many ups and downs along the way!

Firstly in September 2015 it was the Hydro event in Harrogate where Abbie took to the podium with a silver medal. Then in October she fought her way through a very tough group in the White Rose event coming tenth out of eighteen competitors.

At the start of December the team headed up to Edinburg for four days, where Abbie put in a strong performance and came fourth out of another very strong group of twenty eight divers.

The new year brought a tougher challenge, moving up age groups to group D (10-11yrs. The ages are taken at the 31st of December) Abbie will turn ten in October 2016 so she’s now one the youngest in the group again.

Her first event in group D was the Shipley Novices event at the start of May, although this was a very tough event with a thirty strong line-up. Abbie proved herself by placing eighth overall.

Two weeks later Abbie attended the North East Regionals a qualifying event for the National Finals. Well this was Abbie’s best performance of the year so far, needing 255 points to qualify she managed a well-deserved 266.60 and earned herself a new ranking of fifth in the North East.

Abbie headed for the ASA National Skills Finals 2016 which took place in Southend on Sea from the first to the third of July with an open mind, a little nervous but determined to have fun.

It was a shaky start for Abbie on the one metre spring board just not getting her front one and half somersault quite right. Then up on the three metre she really came into her own scoring high points for every dive, a total of 120.95 in just four dives. This took Abbie back up the leader board. Not only did she score a new personal best of 288.20 overall, Abbie made it on to the podium with a silver medal and only 2.5 points away from the top spot. Out of twenty four of the best divers in the country in the group D1 skills level… Abbie is now ranked second - a National Silver Medallist!

Abbie has had an amazing season and all of us at Our Lady and St Brendan's are extremely proud of her. Well done Abbie!
